My approach to clients with addiction issues depends on the nature of the addiction (alcohol and drugs, gambling, internet, smoking, and other compulsive behaviors). Treatment includes addressing the client's denial, employing cognitive behavior therapy, sending clients to AA or NA, and may also involve bringing in members of the client's family to help clients understand the ramifications of their addictions and the necessity to change.

Working with a lot of DUI (now considered OUI) populations as the lead therapist at a major outpatient center, I learned very quickly the causes of most forms of addiction.
