Addiction often reflects desire to escape from upsetting thoughts. It is important to reduce anxiety, depression, traumatic and other upsetting memories prior to moving ahead with treatment of addiction. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is used to reduce emotionally based unwanted addictive cravings, which could include cravings for chocolate, sweets, certain foods, alcohol and other substances. This is most effective following desensitization of traumatic and/or other upsetting life stimuli. Reducing upset with EMDR therapy likely creates less emotional pressure to engage in addictive cravings and then the cravings themselves can be directly targeted.
