We use a client centered approach, supplementing individual therapy with family treatment and group therapy as appropriate. We address substance abuse and other addictions, and have therapists who have completed certificates in sexual health. We are in the process of becoming certified for gambling addiction treatment through the State of Michigan. For opiate and other substance addictions, we work closely with a medical doctor who treats addictions. We have offered alternatives to traditional Intensive Outpatient Programs, creating individualized intensive treatment programs utilizing individual, family and group treatment.

Addiction is a huge threat to one's well-being. I teach individuals how to deal with temptation and put a plan in place. Surrounding oneself with positive people who can assist is also critical. Abstinence is still the best approach if one is a true addict that is recovering. Unfortunately, addiction not only affects one's potential, but also raises havoc with loved ones.

Do you or a loved one have a difficult or crippling addiction that has taken hold of your life? The word “addiction” carries a heavy negative undertone and the counseling process will help clients see themselves as much more than their addiction. People can become addicted to just about anything. Some of the more common addictions are smoking, drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex, and shopping among countless others. An addiction is when you feel a compulsive need to do something and you have no ability to control that desire. Addictions can interfere with your way of life, be detrimental to your health, cause financial problems, damage your family or social relationships, and completely overtake your life. Addictions can also cause you to hurt yourself or someone you love. I can help you manage your addictions through behavioral and cognitive counseling.

Sexual addiction is our top specialty. Those with out of control sexual behaviors find themselves missing work, staying up all night, going against their own values and putting themselves at risk for legal, marital and health consequences. We don't pathologize the sexual behaviors, we explore the unhealthy relationship the client has with the sexual behaviors. There isn't any certain sexual act that is problematic as much as it is the compulsivity around it. Worse is the effects on a someone who discovers their partner is sexual acting out with other people, pornography or any other sexual betrayal. The betrayal is profound and recovering from this demands the right set of therapeutic tools.

I recognize that the most important aspect to an effective therapeutic treatment is the quality of the relationship between the client and therapist. Through this collaborative approach, the client and I identify their strengths and build on these characteristics through therapy. We identify areas in the individuals’ life which are not useful or producing an undesirable outcome-such as self-destructive behavior, poor communication skills, etc.
