Treating addictions requires various approaches. The first level of treatment focuses on sobriety. We focus on tools and behaviors that will result in abstinence of the addictive behavior. Usually, that requires involvement in a 12-step program and therapy is supportive and psycho-educational. Once sobriety and recovery have been established, then therapy can begin to look at deeper issues, causes, and past wounds, thus allowing for true healing to take place.

Addictions have a life of their own. The brain and body become conditioned to require this substance or behavior in order to feel good. Breaking the habit is relatively easy. Maintaining "sobriety" is tougher. Most people can't keep away from their addition because they benefit from it in some very deep and beneficial way. We need to find a way to fulfill that deep need/benefit, even better than the habit behavior allows. We will also work on an improving your ability to a) tolerate stress, b) postpone gratification, and c) self-comfort in healthy ways.
