Peer support is a supportive relationship between people who have a lived experience in common. Here at MDAO, we offer free one-on-one peer support sessions, peer support through our Warm Line, and peer support drop-in groups for individuals and families affected by a mood disorder. Our peer supporters are volunteers who have completed peer support training to understand how they can use their own experience with a mood disorder, or experience supporting someone with a mood disorder, to provide emotional support to others.
What does peer support training involve?
Our peer support training offers a theoretical background, as well as practical skills. It takes place over 4 days and covers a range of topics including the background and foundation of peer support, values of peer support, boundaries and limits, group peer support, and a toolbox of practical skills and techniques. The training includes 5 modules spread throughout 4 days, or 8 half days.
How do I sign up for peer support training?
The level one peer support training is offered free of charge for volunteers. Level One Peer Support Training is the first step towards certification as a peer supporter.
