Most people are familiar with the term PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder. PTSD refers to a traumatic event that the individual has witnessed or experienced that they have great difficulty overcoming emotionally. Complex PTSD or C-PTSD refers to ongoing trauma, such as childhood abuse, domestic violence, multiple combat deployments, being the victim of sex trafficking, or being kidnapped for a prolonged time—situations that were ongoing, harmful and abusive, and where the victim feels trapped.

While everyday stressors pose a minimal threat and, therefore, provoke only slight stress reactions that are generally easy to cope with, certain types of stressors pose a significant threat and thus provoke debilitating stress reactions that are significantly more difficult to cope with.

Therefore, it is essential for all of us to know how to recognize the symptoms of trauma associated with crime and learn how to deal with it in a healthy way. Failure to do the latter may result in serious maladjustment, which can have a detrimental effect on our road to recovery from victimization.
