A new study published in Communications Medicine looked at predicting which patients with cancer will see a psychiatrist or counsellor from their initial oncology consultation document using natural language processing. “Our study is about using artificial intelligence to predict which patients with cancer will see a counsellor or psychiatrist,” study author Dr. John-Jose Nunez told us. “We do this by using AI models to read the document an oncologist writes after the first appointment with a patient. The AI is then able to predict which patients will go on to see a psychiatrist or counsellor with accuracy above 70%.”

A new study published in the Journal of Public Health and Environment shows a clear and drastic rise in the number of deadly brain cancers in recent years, raising the debate that a contributing factor is the widespread use of mobile phones. But despite the recent release, experts are divided more than ever on the question of whether or not cell phones and brain cancer risk are linked. Health experts caution against undue anxiety over the use of their cell phones.

The irony cannot be overlooked. When first diagnosed with cancer, patients would do anything to beat the disease and survive. But, as medical advances continue to improve, many survivors are feeling beaten down by the psychological and sometimes physical effects that remain after successfully defeating their diseases. As World Cancer Day is celebrated, survivors are speaking out in the hopes of improving their own lives and the lives of millions of future survivors.

The diagnosis of lung cancer can be frightening. It is only normal to feel the need to find a cure that avoids the harsh realities of surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and possibly of hospice care. The diagnosis of lung cancer need not be a death sentence, though. If detected early, lung cancer is quite survivable and even advanced lung cancer can be treated in such a way that the person may survive for several years after the diagnosis.
