Suws Of The Carolinas, Wilderness Residential Treatment

Suws Of The Carolinas View Specialties

SUWS of the Carolinas is a premier provider of wilderness and adventure treatment for young people ages 10-17. We provide a supportive outdoor environment where young people can work through depression, addiction, and other behavioral health concerns away from the stress of everyday life. Our campus is located within the Pisgah National Forest in Old Fort, North Carolina.

Wilderness therapy is a unique approach to helping young people that combines traditional evidence-based therapies with wilderness expeditions. These expeditions provide an opportunity to build self-esteem, learn leadership skills, and develop a greater awareness of the needs of others. SUWS of the Carolinas is both a mental health treatment center and an addiction treatment center.

The Phoenix Outdoor program is designed to help teens ages 14-17 who have addictions and co-occurring mental health disorders. Common concerns treated in this program include drug addiction, defiant behavior, depression, academic failure, anxiety, and more. It is a 12-Step-based program complemented by cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and a focus on developing healthy relationships.

The Bravo (for boys ages 14-17) and Luna (for girls ages 14-17) programs address mental health and behavioral health concerns like anxiety and depression, trauma, anger, emotion regulation, substance use, and academic failure. Both programs offer a multifaceted approach to treatment that has been shown to improve children’s coping strategies and their responses to treatment overall.

The Seasons program for children ages 10-13 addresses concerns such as defiant behavior, learning challenges, family conflict, manipulation, and lying. A variety of therapies, including cognitive behavioral and experiential, are combined to provide students with engaging therapeutic activities. Ropes courses, expressive arts, and mind-body therapies help the youngest students at SUWS of the Carolinas build a strong foundation for lasting health.

SUWS of the Carolinas is a leading behavioral health treatment center because of our unique psychological testing process. By conducting a comprehensive evaluation, our qualified providers can make an accurate diagnosis and identify a child’s strengths and risk factors. This valuable information is used to develop an individualized treatment plan to serve each student’s needs.

The dedicated staff at SUWS of the Carolinas understands that behavioral problems and addiction affect the entire family. Family participation is a crucial part of every student’s healing journey. Families are encouraged to participate in a family assessment and programming that parallels their child’s program. Free virtual parent workshops and other parenting resources, as well as support for siblings, are available. Phone calls and letters from the family to students are also a chance to actively participate in the student’s journey. When families reunite at the end of treatment, it can be an emotional experience.

SUWS of the Carolinas hosts a three-day Trail’s End event to help parents and their children transition to the next stage of their relationship. Families engage in guided reunions to get reacquainted with each other and practice new skills. The last day of the graduation process includes a ceremony to honor the accomplishments of each student and send them “on the trail” feeling supported and recognized.
