We are results-driven mind trainers for people who hate barriers!

At ShiftGrit, our Registered Psychologists care about our performance because we care about the client's results. Our mission is to help as many people as we can build their custom-built realities. ShiftGrit Psychology & Counselling is excited to celebrate 10 years in business with its flagship service, The Shift Protocol, designed to provide clients with a groundbreaking, comprehensive approach to mental health therapy. The Shift Protocol is a step-by-step plan that serves as the backbone of therapy and a method of reliably identifying and addressing the root causes of Anxiety, Depression, PTSD, OCD/OCPD, Binge Eating, Poor Self-Esteem, Addiction, Burnout, Self-Harm, BPD and many other clinical concerns.

The ShiftGrit Method

Here at ShiftGrit, we use the Shift Protocol- a structured therapy program that uses counter-conditioning and evidence-based techniques to establish new perspectives. This creates better, automatic responses for our clients- things like less reactivity, stronger boundaries, healthy assertiveness, smoother communication, improved mood-optimized performance... and many more... The goal of our therapy is to get to the root cause of your concerns, as opposed to just coming up with band-aid solutions.

Reconditioning the responses of the “walnut brain” (pre-evolutionary brain) using psychological techniques similar to classical conditioning. We often use the analogy of rehabilitating a rescue dog afraid of work boots. The goal is to replace the dog’s fear response to work boots with a sense of safety by gradually exposing the dog to the boots in controlled, positive situations. This process parallels the idea of reprocessing traumatic associations in humans, achieved through incremental exposure and controlled responses, known as classical conditioning in reverse.

To do this, we look at some of your early emotional or even traumatic memories. Through Reconditioning, we remove the emotions that are connected to those memories so that when you come across similar situations, you don’t have that same emotional reaction to things that you used to. The hope is that you can lead a more productive and fulfilling life, without all those intrusive thoughts, behaviours, and emotions getting in the way. Humans are capable of amazing things when they don't have these unhelpful reactions in the way.

At ShiftGrit, we provide a structured, clinician-led protocol to all our clients that can be easily adapted to fit many concerns. This way you are being led to actively work towards your therapeutic goals each session. All our Calgary Therapists utilize the protocol provided by ShiftGrit and we have observed great results in our client outcomes. Your psychologist may customize your therapy further, with solution-focused or behavioural therapy add-ons, depending on your therapeutic concerns and goals. Because of our structured approach, the need for a strong personality fit between client and clinician is not as important as in other traditional types of therapy.

Our psychologists and counsellors are trained in the Shift Protocol and offer therapy and treatment to various clients, including adults, children, and teens. We have helped clients with depression, anxiety, relationship problems, addictions, self-harming behaviour, trauma and PTSD, stress, life transitions, and much more.

Before I started the journey to become a Calgary Psychologist, I was a paramedic and had aspirations of becoming a doctor. However, along the way, I realized that helping the mind can do as much good as helping the body, which is something that is not commonly acknowledged by the world at large. This became even more apparent to me during my time as a student-athlete at the University of Calgary, where I noticed many of my teammates were struggling with various mental health issues. I watched as many of them sorted out professional mental health support and the amazing differences it made when both the mind and the body were given proper care.

My choice to practice in the field of Calgary Psychology was a no-brainer. At a very early age, I realized that I flourish and am most content in situations where I can be useful to others around me. I enjoy engaging with people and supporting them in resolving their issues. Upon completing my undergraduate studies in psychology, I came to learn that although we all share this world each individual has a different way of viewing this shared environment and the situations we may find ourselves in. Another powerful concept I took away from my formal education in the field is that this view of the world isn't always fixed and we as people can be able to change our perspective on the world around us to better serve us. Upon beginning my career as a psychologist, it has been my mission to share this information using evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), neuropsychology, and brain spotting. I wholeheartedly believe that we all have the potential to gain control of our lives and make positive changes and I am dedicated to helping my clients achieve their goals of living their best lives.

The most intriguing questions come from examining the human condition. I became a Calgary Psychologist because I have always been fascinated by how people think, feel and behave. Moreover, I have observed that much of our struggles and challenges come from our negative self-affirmations. Throughout my education and training, I developed a passion for using evidence-based approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness to help people improve their mental health and well-being. I have made it my life’s work to help my clients examine their thought patterns and emotions, develop a sense of autonomy, and build the confidence to navigate through life with kindness and compassion for themselves and others.

From a young age, I've been intrigued by the complexity of human behaviour and the various factors that shape our thoughts and emotions. I believe that understanding the intricacies of the mind not only enriches our own lives but also empowers us to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of others. Having served in the United States Navy for 15 years, my transition from the battlefield to the world of psychology is a testament to my unwavering commitment to understanding and helping others navigate the complexities of the human mind.

My time in the military exposed me to a myriad of challenges, both physical and emotional. It was during these moments that I realized the profound impact psychological well-being has on an individual's ability to cope and thrive in demanding environments. The camaraderie forged in the face of adversity sparked my interest in the psychology of resilience and how individuals adapt to stress.

I witnessed firsthand the toll that prolonged deployments and high-stakes situations can take on mental health. This experience fueled my passion for pursuing a career in psychology, driven by the belief that every person, regardless of their background, deserves access to mental health support.

My military service instilled in me the values of discipline, resilience, and empathy—qualities that I now channel into my knowledge and practice as a Calgary Psychologist.

At an early age, I have always been the friend that everyone would go to with their problems. Whether it be family or interpersonal relationships, they trusted me to confide in and be there for them. I have always been inspired by the "helping profession" and how the brain works. My not getting into Social Work led me to help others in the dental field for over 26 years. During that time, I have volunteered many hours in various organizations and worked at the Distress Center. My own experience with therapy to my passion for helping others have led me to ShiftGrit. I bring my skills and talent to the therapeutic setting to help my clients recognize their goals, manifest their vision, and succeed.

I became independent at 14 years old and faced several personal and systemic challenges; such as poverty, stigma, lack of education, anxiety, undiagnosed ADHD and trauma. I met a Social Worker in my late teens who helped me manage my reactions, feelings and thoughts around these difficult challenges. With the support of family members and friends, I was able to improve my self-confidence and work towards my mental health goals. My experiences gave me a desire to become a social worker. Over the past decades, these experiences have allowed me to understand how feelings, thoughts and behaviours can manifest into challenges in how we function and interact with the world. I believe that anyone can make a change with compassionate, understanding people supporting you. I also believe people are resilient and can learn new skills and coping strategies to improve their lives.

My desire to help people led me into social work but i soon came to the realization that i am not able to impact change at an individual level so moved into clinical work. My desire of become a therapist has provided me with the opportunity to support clients cope with issues that impact day to day functioning.

I am fascinated by the human experience! I often cannot contain my excitement and enthusiasm for the revelations and ah-ha moments that come out in interaction with other humans. The wiring of the brain and all that transpires from the science behind this leaves me with a continued thirst to know more, to learn more, and to put more pieces together. The ding of the lightbulb in the face of epiphany whether it is my own or others is what drives me to pursue my passion of aiding in elevating other people into the best version of themselves. My belief system is firmly rooted in the desire to spread the sentiment that we are all deserving of living an optimized life, and that we are all capable of bravery and courage and of getting out of our own way.

I decided to become a psychologist because of my own experiences in therapy in the past. I have experienced firsthand how beneficial and transformative therapy can be. I realized that it would be deeply rewarding to help another person feel understood, develop clarity about life, and start taking steps forward to create their ideal life. My main reasons for becoming a psychologist are to create a positive therapy experience that results in growth, and the fulfillment that comes with helping others to heal and reach their potential.

I always had a knack for wanting to help people and for solving problems. I also love to learn about how we as people work and understand the world around us. These traits were instilled into me by my parents but also by my grandparents, who had a huge influence on my life. It took off when I took a high school psychology class and I realized that I could use these traits in a career. On top of that, I have had school counsellors, professors and teachers who inspired me and built the traits and skills that I have today.

Asking for help is perhaps one of the hardest decisions to make. It can be uncomfortable to take that step, or even confusing to know what step to take. I wanted to reduce the discomfort that comes with asking for help, and the stigma around seeking support around our well-being. I have had my own experiences with mental health stigma, and one of the hardest experiences for me was to openly talk about my mental health. I became a therapist because I began to see the value in providing a space where we can heal, learn and grow from our pain, in a space where we accept that both positive and negative feelings are normal and welcomed.

When working with clients, my primary goal is to help them focus on their strengths and skills, and ameliorate those to help reach their full potential and optimize their lives. Through collaboration, we work to lay out a specific, clear plan and then we take action toward those achievable goals. Goals can range from helping with everyday tasks like organization or time management, or involve improvement in broader goals like boundary setting and self-confidence building. By helping my clients recognize the power they already wield while uncovering more, I strive to inspire my clients to start carving out the life they are excited about.

At a tender young age, I realized that talking about your problems often helps you organize your thoughts and problem-solve. I was fortunate. I had a mom who helped me to discover this early in my life, along with the importance of empathy, validation, and reflective listening in the art of regulating emotions and as a precursor to reaching goals and manifesting your vision. In high school, I had a teacher who recognized and mentored me in these same skills. I bring these skills and my talent to the therapeutic setting to help my clients realize their goals, manifest their vision, and flourish.
