Philosophy
Our approach to Couples Counseling: Emotionally Focused Therapy
For working with couples, our entire team specializes in Emotionally Focused Therapy. This is a style of therapy that is research-based and shown to be effective 75% of the time with strengthening couples’ relationships.
The core of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is this: Most often, couples who come to us are caught in some repeating negative cycles in their relationship, whether that looks like having the same arguments over and over, repeatedly feeling hurt by one another in small or large ways, getting stuck in a feeling of disconnect, or something else.
Through EFT, your therapist will help you identify and understand the negative cycles happening in your relationship. Then, they will dig deeper with you to uncover what emotions, thought patterns, or unmet needs are underneath those cycles and causing them to repeat. We find that by exploring those underlying emotions and needs, and help you understand and communicate them, we can help you and your partner come to a deeper place of connection with one another, and break your cycles to go from angry, withdrawn, upset, or overwhelmed, to secure, calm, loving, and bonded in your relationship.
Individual Counseling
Our approach to therapy with individuals is respectful, collaborative, optimistic, and holistic. People are best understood based on how they relate to others. This is rooted in the patterns learned in their most significant relationship experiences – usually their relationship with their parents. So your family history is very important.
Since reality and meaning are created by you, what you think about your problem and yourself is very important. It is also significant what is happening for you in the present moment, in the therapy room and in the therapeutic relationship. Your problems will be explored by looking at some of your beliefs about yourself, the world and how you might be unknowingly perpetuating the problem.
