Welcome! My name is Alex Alburquenque, and I am a dedicated counsellor and registered social worker offering trauma-informed, strengths-based, and person-centered counselling services in Kamloops, BC, as well as virtually. My passion for supporting others in their healing journeys comes from my own experiences of experiencing trauma and feeling lost. It wasn’t until I began counselling myself that I truly found my sense of self and my calling. That experience ignited a deep commitment in me to help others do the same—to heal, grow, and move toward self-compassion. Supporting others with their healing fills my heart, and I strive to create a space where clients feel safe, heard, and empowered.
My approach to therapy is highly individualized, adapting to each client’s unique needs. I believe therapy should move at a pace that feels right for you, and I encourage transparency and collaboration in sessions. Some clients prefer to build a strong therapeutic relationship before diving deep, while others are ready to jump right in. Some know what they want to process, other's aren't sure why they feel the way they do. Some want to learn about the science behind therapy, while others are focused on building coping skills or discussing challenges. No matter what brings you to counselling, I work to ensure that therapy feels supportive, comfortable, and non-judgmental.
I have a deep passion for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, which I use to help clients process trauma and shift negative self-beliefs. What I love most about EMDR is how uniquely each person experiences it. Our brains all process in different ways, and EMDR honors that individuality. It allows people to feel less emotionally charged by their past experiences and change how they see themselves. Studies show that EMDR can significantly reduce trauma symptoms, and I love that it is evidence-based, client-centered, and highly adaptable. I also integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) into my work, supporting clients in recognizing negative thought patterns and developing practical coping skills for anxiety, depression, and emotional regulation.
As a queer, biracial therapist, I know what it feels like to be “othered.” My practice is inclusive, anti-oppressive, and affirming, providing a space where you can feel safe to be exactly who you are. I believe queerness is an important and valuable part of identity—something to be recognized and celebrated.
Outside of the therapy room, I am a creative person. I love painting, sketching, and photography, and I bring my appreciation for art into my work by encouraging artistic clients express themselves in creative and meaningful ways. When I’m not in session, you can often find me paddleboarding at Heffley Lake in the summer, spending time by the ocean whenever I can, traveling, reading, or caring for my two beloved feline companions with my partner.
If you’re looking for a therapist who values authenticity, empathy, and personalized care, I am here to support you. My hope is that after reading this, you feel a sense of possibility—that a happier and brighter future is within reach.
