Together we will explore the many “puzzle pieces” that make up your past and current life experiences and beliefs.  We will use them to help build a coherent picture of where you have come from and where you would like to go. I use compassion, authenticity and insight to create a space where you are safe to process your thoughts and feelings, strengths and struggles and to receive support for expressing, connecting with and honouring your deepest values and life goals.

The first step in therapy is usually to identify the issue(s) you would like help or support with. The next step is to figure out where you want to go (what will we use to identify your growth and healing?) Together we will create a map of what has made the journey difficult, what are your life patterns, and how, with your unique strengths and challenges, we can get you to the place you want to be.

Working with people who desire growth and healing is such a joy and honour to me. It is not one I take lightly. I am committed to doing my own personal work and to continue deepening and broadening my knowledge of up-to-date research and best practices in the areas in which I specialize. After almost 30 years of practicing as a therapist and supervisor to therapists, I have seen many counselling techniques and theories come and go. What stays constant, however, are practices rooted in research which produce lasting results.

I love seeing individuals, couples and families of all kinds but specialize in three areas:

1. Coercive Control and Emotional Abuse: When individuals have been (or are currently in) relationships where they are exposed to pervasive and consistent emotional abuse/coercive control techniques (such as gaslighting, eggshell walking, withdrawal of affection, contempt, love-bombing, etc.) their voices have been robbed and their sense of self often eroded. Trying to express the subtleties and nuances of covert abuse can place the person in jeopardy of being further dismissed and even revictimized. Expressing the pain with someone who can identify, label and give language to the abuse can be tremendously relieving and help people to regain their voice, sense of self and strength. This includes child/parent relationships as well as intimate and employment relationships.

2. Parenting and Family: Through training, personal experience, research and practice I have learned that secure attachment is by far the most effective way to support or improve the overall well-being of children.  Children raised with secure attachment relationships enjoy higher self-esteem, emotional regulation, greater resilience, healthier and more stable peer relationships, decreased mental health issues and healthier romantic relationships.   Together we will work on identifying secure attachment strengths as well as challenges in order to foster and improve a secure relationhsip between child and caregiver.

3. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: CBT is a well-documented therapy for use in anxiety and depression. It seeks to make destructive and distorted subconscious thoughts conscious so people can challenge and ideally eliminate them. The roots of many destructive behaviours can live and thrive in distorted thoughts and beliefs. When we uncover the distortions we can reveal the truth behind them and be set free.
