We specialize in couples counseling. Our approach is one which acknowledges the emotional aspect of both individuals. We listen intently and provide a critical analysis so that all involved have a clear understanding of the issue and where there is possible miscommunication. We have found that there are typically areas in which both individuals can improve, and we focus on where those areas of improvement are needed. We also understand the delicate nature of couples counseling in that each is typically passionate in their own beliefs. We are very skilled communicators in getting buy in to where personal growth is needed.

There are countless models of healthy romantic relationships, from monogamous to polyamorous, and unique variations between partners. The scripts for dating and longterm relationships of our parents’ generations may not be applicable to your relationship, and there is no formal education in how to be a good partner or how to identify unhealthy relationships. But there is psychological research that shows that effective communication, emotional openness, intimacy, and other factors contribute to healthy relationships. Creating these conditions are skills that can be learned. I practice brief humanistic and emotion-focused therapy (EFT) to help my LGBTQ and hetero clients learn these skills.

Couples' therapy aims to help couples recognize conflicts, resolve conflicts, and improve their relationships. Through couples' therapy, you can make thoughtful decisions about rebuilding your relationship or going your separate ways. I am trained in several evidence-based couples' therapy models. I help couples understand underlying issues in their relationship, explore how their past has shaped their present behavior, and gain a better understanding of each other’s emotions.

In couples therapy the goal is to teach spouses to learn how to intervene with each other, to make their next conversation better, providing tools to work with to learn how to change communciation patterns, self soothe and even soothe on another. My work involves helping couples find a way to honor both of their life dreams, resolve conflicts and have a stable and satisifying marriage. Couples counseling is similar to marriage counseling except the two people are not married. Sometimes this is premarital counseling. Sometimes it's with couples who are in a committed relationship, but are not married. Sometimes it's with couples who are divorced and are considering remarriage.
