Couples counseling is extremely rewarding work when the lights come on for the couple about how to relate to each other in ways that they both appreciate. We begin with basic understandings about boundaries and learn quickly how to talk and act in healthier ways. Most of us simply communicate the way that our parents did and if we can learn to improve on this just a little, there is almost immediate relief. Using better boundaries (even in talking) are the building block for healthier communication and better emotional intimacy.

When couples choose Melanie as their therapist, they get an advocate for the relationship--not to pick sides. Any coupling is the meeting of two cultures: two completely different people with completely different experiences, values, strengths, and ways to see the world. Melanie will be happy to point out areas that are strengths in your relationship, and help each person craft responses that yield communication instead of conflict. Through evidence-based techniques, such as active listening, conflict resolution strategies, I help couples develop effective communication skills and enhance their emotional connection. By working collaboratively with the couple, I strive to empower them with tools and strategies to navigate conflicts, rebuilds trust, and cultivate a healthy and fulfilling relationship.

We specialize in couples counseling. Our approach is one which acknowledges the emotional aspect of both individuals. We listen intently and provide a critical analysis so that all involved have a clear understanding of the issue and where there is possible miscommunication. We have found that there are typically areas in which both individuals can improve, and we focus on where those areas of improvement are needed. We also understand the delicate nature of couples counseling in that each is typically passionate in their own beliefs. We are very skilled communicators in getting buy in to where personal growth is needed.

I have completed Level 1 training in the Gottman Method. I use this approach when working with couples. I begin with the Gottman Assessment, which consists of more than 300 questions. This assessment provides information such as relationship satisfaction, communication styles, viewpoints on whether you feel known by your partner, trust, infidelity issues, commitment levels, and much more. The assessment provides a roadmap of the journey towards improving communication and the friendship with your spouse.
