I have been in the education and social wellness field for almost 20 years, specializing in counselling individuals, couples, and families to live purposeful, joy filled lives by focusing on Mental and Emotional work first. My approach supports client competencies (strengths) and solution based therapy. I work with children aged 6+ and begin with exploring and establishing the parameters within which children feel safe. Depending on what those parameters might be, we might use art therapy to establish boundaries (for example, by validating client's inner knowledge of what is 'good' or 'bad'), or to make space for difficult feelings. We might also use art and a child's natural curiosity to explore the way our brains work, for example, with respect to a difficult memory. The priority however, is always to maintain safety by only exploring the parameters of growth in a careful way in each session. My style and approach is one that readily engages children and youth in a trusting and safe relationship. I use directive activities to address issues such as anger, trauma, stress reduction, social skills and self-esteem. Play based activities are used to engage otherwise resistant children to help them verbalize their presenting issues, reduce their anxiety and encourage self-disclosure. I utilize a strength-based and trauma-informed approach to care. I incorporate play, creativity, and art into sessions to help children understand difficult thoughts and emotions. My approach includes working with the parent or caregiver to strengthen the connection and offer strategies to utilize at home.

My approach to counseling for young children is based on the Neufeld Institute's Intensive Training course which seeks to view and understand child development through the lens of vulnerability, maturation, and attachment, and to support parents in understanding and addressing the underlying needs and concerns beneath behavioral issues. In working with kiddos I use recreational tools and play techniques to encourage participation and create a safe and supportive environment.
