I have never really liked the word "management" when speaking about anger. It makes it sound as though anger is "bad" therefore you need to "manage" it somehow. Anger in and of itself isn't "bad;" it is what we do with it that can be. When I am working with children and I ask them how they are feeling, I say to them, "Are you feeling mad, sad, glad, or afraid today?" Anger is one of our most basic emotions. Would you agree that anger is easier to feel than sadness or fear? Anger tells us that something is wrong in our lives and we need to pay attention. With your permission of course, I like to look at the causes of anger and explore with you its' roots.

Anger management therapy offers benefits for individuals seeking to understand and regulate their emotions constructively. Through evidence-based techniques and cognitive-behavioral approaches, counselling helps clients identify triggers, explore underlying beliefs, and develop healthy coping strategies. By developing self-awareness and emotional regulation skills, therapy empowers individuals to respond to anger in adaptive ways, reducing the risk of impulsive or destructive behaviors. Clients learn effective communication skills and problem-solving techniques to address conflicts and assert boundaries assertively.

Unrestrained anger, like an untrained dog, can cause chaos in life. It is often the secondary response, to a primary emotion like fear, hurt or sadness, or from an objective in life being blocked. Taking a Narrative Approach, rather than a step-by-step program, I'll explore with you the root causes, and ways in which, anger has defined your life, while also looking at strategies that help to retain control when anger appears. Discover and understand where your anger is coming from, and help learn ways to help it to 'heel'.

Learning how to cope with the overwhelming feeling of anger is difficult, but not impossible. Through counselling one can learn how to pay attention to triggers and then develop alternative strategies in how to display strong feelings, such as anger, in ways that are more beneficial to both the individual and other people in his or her life. Many individuals in our society are not taught how to handle overwhelming emotions; instead, many people from a young age are directly or indirectly taught to repress or not show strong emotion. Counselling offers a resource to support clients in a gentle way how to tolerate the intensity of emotion, including anger.

I value anger. It is such an important emotion! It is an identifier, it is a messenger, it lets us know something in unjust, it’s a communicator and it is an energizer. Each and every role and function is important for us to accept and recognize. This doesn’t mean we get to act angry and lash out. What we need to do is understand the personal message and work with it. When we understand why we feel angry, we can change our thinking; share our thoughts respectfully; change our behaviour choices; make a plan; follow through on tasks; etc. Anger is a gift that we can use to make us stronger and make things better.

We will examine the emotions overlying the events surrounding the anger's development and any underlying beliefs that prolong the anger, particularly if it surprises you. We would explore underlying beliefs that usually accompany your anger by identifying triggers and situations where you have encountered it. We may role play setting boundaries to encounter triggers calmly and limit your exposure to them. By identifying your unique mental and physical reactions (your early warning system), we develop your ability to calmly notice the anger's beginnings with grounding exercises and journalling, helping you to identify faulty thinking and choose new responses.

Anger management programs focused on self-control methods can inadvertently teach people to struggle more effectively. I believe that you can actually stop the struggle itself. Your angry feelings need to be acknowledged, but they do not need to determine who you are and how you live your life, and they do not need to leave the people you love on pins and needles for fear of your anger. Your anger can even become an asset, not a detriment.

Why do you feel angry? Anger is a natural aspect of life, but when we direct it excessively inward or outward, it can a significantly impact crucial aspects of our lives, such as our relationships, work and overall health. In counselling, I can assist you in examining the triggers or reasons behind your anger - this step is essential for addressing it. Sometimes our internal thoughts or self talk contribute to our anger, while other times external stressors make managing our emotions difficult. Once we identify the underlying causes, we can work together to find healthier ways for you to express and resolve your anger, ultimately minimizing it negative effects on your life.

Anger often stems from feeling so many emotions all at once. You lose a sense of control. You go from 0 to 100 in a blink of an eye. By getting angry you’re attempting to regain control that’s presumed lost. But instead, you’re full of guilt and shame. Feeling angry and reacting in anger, is simply exhausting. I’ll help you learn how to regain control, in a healthy way.
