Has your addiction taken control of your life? Whatever the addiction, it can have a stronghold on the quality of your life and your relationships. Often, addiction provides a way to cope with life. Whatever your story, we can work together to begin the process of awareness about the triggers, emotions, hurt, and stressors that are behind the addiction. Gabor Mate posits that “it is impossible to understand addiction without asking what relief the addict finds, or hopes to find, in the drug or the addictive behaviour.” Whatever your story, I am here to come alongside you on your road to recovery.

Often, addiction can result from unresolved trauma in your life. I use a harm-reduction framework rather than a “tough love” one. For some, a 12-step program helps with recovery. For others, an integrative approach to therapy helps people heal from addiction. Using the person-centred approach to treatment, I will help you explore these areas of trauma so that you can cope better in your life. By forming a relationship built on trust and respect with you and your family, I hope to provide the support, resources, and non-judgmental environment to help you recover from your addiction and find meaning in your life.

Bev sees addictions as the person's band-aid way to live their life. Bev charts with the client what the addicting agent gives to the client and then what this costs the client. This understanding is very important for the client in being able to begin to heal. The client needs to learn how to meet their real needs in healthy ways. The client needs to be confronted with the repercussions of their habit and how it affects them and those around them. The client needs hope that life can be meaningful and liveable. Clients need to be able to explore their feelings and unresolved issues in a safe, non-judgmental environment and learn to process feeling feelings and address issues.

I work with children whose parents experience alcohol addiction, as well as spouses and those who themselves are addicted. With children in particular we use imagery or play (depending on age) to normalize their experience, as well as to identify the role(s) they have found themselves filling in relation to the family member's addiction. We then work on creating boundaries and parameters aimed at making the client feel safe and stable, so that they can go on and develop and reach their own goals. In working with one who is addicted themselves, I use family systems theory to identify the wounded part of one's self, whose pain we might cope with using alcohol.

Addiction work is a process. The addict must come to recognize him/herself as a client. This is often accomplished by considering the costs that the addiction has exacted on one's life. The costs may be financial, relationships, career, or even legal. The addict needs to come to a point that s/he is willing to say that life has become unmanageable. Next, specific work takes place to replace the dysfunctional behaviour, neurologically rewire the brain through sustained behaviour, and then systematically create a new life free of addiction. As said before, it is a process. Addict mentality is crucial to recognize and replace. But it can be done. And it is worth it.

With the use of TEAM-CBT and Motivational Interviewing techniques, along with a Solution Focused Brief Therapy approach we can build solutions to a life of addiction and create real and lasting change. The impetus for addiction change is client-centred and rests in an understanding of a person's readiness and willingness to change. I have worked with the Stages of Change Model for many years.
