Depression may be conceptionalized as a condition serving as a defense mechanism. The depressed individual has given up - so as to no longer be vulnerable to further failure or rejection. In this sense, he/she can not see future possibilities and therefore has lost hope. The inherent difficulty with living one's life to be "safe" is one can not grow.
