The dominant political in the decades following WWII was liberal, left-wing due to the presence of the union and union workers.  The NDP, which is the New Democratic Party, was the dominant political party until the 1990s, when the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario and the Canadian Alliance took charge due to the changing economic and demographic voters.  The city’s political seats are largely filled by the Conservative Party.  The determination for the local government council seats recently reverted to a general voting system.  Although some of the supporters believe that the question on the voting ballot was poorly-worded and that the information was insufficient in order to make an informed decision.  The demographics in Oshawa are largely a Caucasian population with the ethnicity being mostly European.  The religious make up of the area is mostly Christian, with just over one percent being Muslim or Hindu.  Christian marriage counselling supports the need for biblically based therapy.1 Oshawa also has the Canadian headquarters for the Seventh-day Adventist church and is a very popular sports and tourist town.

The different communities in Oshawa include the downtown area, Grandview Heights, Kedron, Kingsway Village, Lake Vista, North, and Thornton Woods.  These are all within the city’s metropolitan area, which is separate from the Greater Toronto Area. Marriage counseling takes a brittle marriage and helps couples to become solidly rooted and focused again.  Seeing a family therapist to aid an ailing relationship can be the best thing a couple can do for themselves.  The city is also a different kind of suburb of Toronto due to its self-sufficient industrial base.  The voters had an opportunity to become part of the Great Toronto area, but the referendum was rejected.  The reason for the rejection may be in large part due to political reasons that the people were unhappy with; therefore, refused to become part of the Greater Toronto Area.  It is also no surprise that  there are several NHL hockey players that are from this area, being a fabulous sporting town for children and families to grow up in.  Some of the players include Arnie Brown, Dale Hawerchuk, Kevin McClelland, John MacLean and Shawn Thornton.

According to a statistical profile published in 2010, roughly 99,000 people were reported victims of family violence in Canada during 2010 alone, with the majority of the victims being women. That equates to 25% of the victims involved in all types of violent crimes in Canada that year. Although it is reported to be the lowest in the Ontario region, the rate of violence against women has remained stable for years, and it is a crime that is not always reported.2 Family violence and violence against women can be prevented. If you or someone you know is a victim of family violence and needs help,Durham Region's Intimate- Relationship Violence Empowerment Network, or DRIVEN, offers support and education on violence against women.
