Oakville is mostly made up of Northern European ethnicity with around 165,000 residents; however, is becoming more and more diverse due to its proximity to Toronto. The age population in Oakville is younger than in other cities in the Greater Toronto Area. The religious makeup of Oakville consists of around 80% stating themselves as Christian and the rest non-Christian religions or no religion at all. Oakville is governed by a town council that consists of a mayor and twelve councilors, with the town being divided into six different wards. This is at the municipal level. The Provincial and Federal levels of the government in Oakville, consists of two provincial ridings for both. Marriage counseling helps either couples together or either spouse to work through issues that are affecting their relation ship. Arts and culture in Oakville is beaming with the performing arts with the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts hosting several different performances by both local and international artists. The symphony and ballet also perform in this centre, among other events throughout the year. There is a memorial park for Taras Shevchenko, a Ukrainian poet who own the park. There is also a museum and statue of the poet in the park. Since Oakville is so close to Toronto, there are not really any options for higher education facilities. Family Services and Assistance Programs
There are several assistance programs available to the Halton region, including Oakville. Programs such as Healthy Smiles Ontario which provides free dental care to residents, the SPLIT pass, which helps pay for 50% or more of a monthly bus pass for those residents who need help getting around through out their day to day lives, and a child care subsidy which helps parents with low incomes pay for child care.
