Mississauga is a multicultural, immigrant population and a recent census provides information that the majority adhere to Christianity, speaking English.  Other groups practice Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhism, and Judaism.  The most common religion is Christian. The area is served by a regional newspaper, radio stations in multilingual and television broadcasting.  In 2006 the city planned over 60 events for the summer festivities and adopted the  “My Mississauga: Celebrate Summer at City Centre” slogan.  The Canada Day celebration was the main event and other attractions included Senior’s day, Family day and Vintage car Thursday. The transformation of the city square has a movable stage, snack bar, seating and sports and gaming facilities as well as a skate park.

Some of the historical attractions are very popular.  The Bradley Museum was created in a frame home from the 1830’s and is furnished with period articles, having a working kitchen.1 The attractive gardens are home to ‘The Anchorage’, a cottage that is a gift shop and tea room.  The Benares Historic House serves as a reflection of the times after World War I.  It displays early 20th century technical advances. The Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame has inducted nearly 100 achievers in sports and coaching.  Unique shopping can be found at the Square One Farmer’s Market, the Fantastic Flea Market and the Marina Market Place.  Here hundreds of vendor stalls and tables display local grown produce, antiques,  jewelery and second hand items along with local crafts.

Marriage and Couples Mental Health in Mississauga

Mississauga is a family city, 77% of the families are home to married couples and another 17% of households are single parent families.2 It is common for married couples in the area to seek therapy for the anxiety and stress related disorders that often develop in fast paced family life.

Anxiety disorders and stress are the most common types of mental health disorders in the Mississauga area. A leading cause of these issues is the prevalence of immigrant families in the region. Though outright racism has been eradicated from most of Canada, many immigrant families and foreign-born residents feel isolated and ostracized from the real' Canadian couples. These supposed differences, especially amongst newlywed immigrant couples, often create social rifts between families and cause couples to seek mental health support to deal with issues in their area.

The Credit Valley Hospital's Anxiety Disorder Program helps individuals, couples and families deal with all forms of social phobia, social anxiety and awkwardness' through a 12 week outpatient program. Couples may enroll their children in the programs, or take part together and separately to work through the problems they feel are taking over their daily contentment.

Family Services and Assistance Programs

Mississauga is the unofficial hub of the South Asian community in Ontario; nearly 60% of all married couples are of South Asian descent.3 The Greater Toronto Area's western health system operates an organization known as the South Asian Community Services.4 At the South Asian Community Services, located in Oakville, culturally and linguistically supportive programs focus on the mental health needs of migrant and migrant-descended residents. Health education, promotion, counselling and Partner Assault response are just some of the family services offered. For married couples and children, the South Asian Community Centre is a round-the-clock facility.
