Family Therapy can address many important relationships, such as marriage, parenting, in-laws, and other adult family relationships. All too often, families get caught up in struggles and lose touch with one another. Sometimes it can help to bring an outside perspective into your family's circle to help make sense of the chaos; to give everyone a voice and the chance to hear one another. A family of four walks into a bar... (okay, therapist's office, fine) each with a different reason why they're there. Also, some of them don't want to be there at all! Get it! Actually, there's no punch-line, it's just normally how it goes. Regardless of what event brings them through the door, families often come in feeling divided and disconnected. That's why my job is to find the common ground so that everyone feels like they're being respected, heard, and have something to gain from the experience. When one family member is depressed, stressed, angry, or otherwise not at their best, it deeply affects the rest of the family. Sometimes individual therapy is the correct path, but often, addressing relationship dynamics within the family system is the quickest, most direct way of dealing with the issue. I work with all ages and all combinations of family members.

Family Therapy can take on various configurations with respect to family member participation. For example, meeting with family members as a whole, individuals or a couple with the goal of enhancing a family’s overall functioning can be a valued approach. For example, meeting with the adults in a family for the purpose of building parenting skills can have a significant impact on improving the overall wellness of a family system. While my practice is strictly online, we can discuss how a family therapy approach can benefit all within the family. Family dynamics can be challenging to navigate even during the best of times, and family therapy can help each member of the family unit find new ways to relate, connect, and communicate with each other. My interest in Family Therapy grew out of my work with patients in acute care hospitals. As I interacted with the patients and their families, I realized that if one family member is in pain, all the family members are somehow affected. This insight caused me to shift my focus away from the more traditional psychodynamic theories I was earlier taught in University and to focus instead on how family therapy and family systems brought healing. This growing body of literature, which started in the 1960s, has revolutionized my thinking, enabling me to find a more generous, holistic, and integrated approach to patient care and family healing.
