Our families can benefit from family therapy when they experience any stressful event that puts pressure on family relationships, such as financial hardship, family fractures or break ups, or the death of a loved one. In the area of family matters, I provide mediation services. Family Mediation process is focused on resolution of concerns and issues that arise in families. In the mediation process, as a neutral party, I assists the disputing parties resolve their disagreement by facilitating their discussions and guiding them to appropriate resources and possible solutions until they reach desired outcomes. *Family mediation is not psychotherapy, marital counseling, or legal representation.

As a specially trained family therapist, I can work with all members of your family, including children and adolescents. I work together with parents, recognizing your expertise in the lives of your own children. My goal is to strengthen that expertise and restore your relationships to a balanced state. I offer young people a relaxed environment and a variety of ways to express themselves including art, writing, and play.

I often find that dealing with mental health and addiction issues is not possible unless we deal with the structural issues of the family. I use a family systems approach where relationships are seen as two-way and reciprocal. It's not about who did what, it's about our relationship skills and ability to manage having a family. A family of four walks into a bar... (okay, therapist's office, fine) each with a different reason why they're there. Also, some of them don't want to be there at all! Get it! My family therapy approach involves seeing the whole family initially to understand each person's unique perspective, provide safety for each person to express themselves and to give each person the opportunity to determine their comfort level with me as therapist. I will then work with parts of the family (eg, siblings, parents, dyads such as Mother/Child, Father/Child, Sib/Sib) to support recognition of the unique cycle each group/dyad experiences as problematic in having the closeness and safety they desire within the family. I use Emotion Focused Family Therapy which is based on attachment research and which acknowledges our need to be known and loved by family members.

Too often, communication stands in the way of good relationships. With families, this is compounded by a number of other issues. Through family therapy, we unpack the preconceived ideas and family roles that we often feel compelled to fall into, we work together to examine relationships. Using a combination of Solution Focused Therapy, client-led exchanges, and role-playing, together we develop new and healthy ways to communicate.
