We do not deal with formal diagnoses of eating disorders, but we do support those with disordered eating. Eating issues often occur alongside depression and anxiety, and we view them as a symptom of deep and painful emotions frequently linked to trauma, stress, or grief/loss. In our work together, we can address how you use food as a coping mechanism when you are stressed or when your relationships are strained. The goal is to understand better the role food plays in helping you cope with painful emotions.

Eating disorders are a symptom of distress and a subsequent need to manage that distress. Understanding the source of the distress can greatly help to alleviate the symptoms enough to learn new ways of coping that are not as compromising of the body, but rather move the individual toward a more balanced regard for self and a healthier lifestyle. Depending on the severity of the disorder it may well require co-operation and participation of other family members as well. However, the disorder is one of society. Due to limitations and restrictions of society, institutions, media, and groups, we have learned to restrict and or indulge ourselves in food. Eating disorders are about food, yes, but they are also about feelings. I help my clients to uncover what it is about their eating habits which soothes a part of their emotional being that is experiencing pain or fear. Only after we reach out to the sad or frightened parts of them can we begin to apply good practical strategies which, over time, will help to change the destructive eating patterns which they find themselves caught up in. My approach is non-judgmental and encouraging, and I see our work as a journey to a healthy relationship with food that we are taking together. I know it's possible because I've seen many clients get there, even though they've tried before without success.
