Anxiety often hits us unexpectedly. We might manage stress well enough until at some point the body's resources seem to get diminished and the body starts to talk back. Some symptoms of Anxiety & Stress might be: difficulty breathing, sleeping and/or eating; restless mind; negative thoughts and tumultuous emotions. The work I find most helpful to improve your skills for dealing with these fear-based emotions; includes cultivating a better relationship with your body and your emotions. As you become more aware of your actual limitations and pay greater attention to your needs, your body can achieve a more balanced state.

Stress and anxiety is a part of everyone's day to day lives. However, when it becomes difficult to function due to loss of sleep, change in appetite, panic attacks, upset stomach, aches & pains, etc. therapy can be most beneficial. I use various relaxation techniques, deep breathing, mindfulness meditation, as well as talk therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy techniques (addressing self defeating automatic thinking patterns which effect our mood and behavior). I can teach you how to manage unpleasant symptoms related to stress and anxiety.

In these unprecedented times in our lives many of us are dealing with feelings of great uncertainty about our individual future and how to handle and cope with life changes. Repetitive thoughts are often aligned with anxiety. Anxiety has a cyclical pattern and unless it is interrupted it will run its course, causes overwhelming feelings of fear and despair. Through a compassionate and observational lens reducing stress and anxiety will cultivate focus and clarity. Low levels of anxiety can motivate us to accomplish goals and perform at our best. As the level of experienced anxiety creeps higher, it robs us of our joy and can make us feel overwhelmed resulting in either inactivity or a compulsion to be overactive yet not experiencing any lasting relief. Our sense of internal peace and calm is replaced by perpetual overthinking and fear. Let's work together to gain insight into the root cause of your anxiety so that we are able to empower you to reclaim your experience of joy and a sense of internal calm.

Anxiety is our body’s way of getting us ready for action, getting us ready to fight or flee in a given situation which, while helpful in keeping us alive, can be very unhelpful when it negatively impacts our ability to live our daily lives. I work collaboratively with clients to explore how anxiety and stress show up in their lives, and to strengthen and develop strategies to minimize the impact they have on living the life you want to live. Depending on the source (if it can be identified) most anxiety can be effectively treated with various forms of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). Behavioural experiments and exposures, combined with thought analysis and restructuring can bring about swift positive improvements. However, CBT for anxiety is hard work and involves willingness to experience discomfort as one learns to tolerate their fears and then experiences the powerful safety feedback which counters them. With practice, anxiety can be nearly completely extinguished. If panic is related to trauma, a longer and involved process may be needed using EMDR, imagery re-scripting or dialectical behavioural interventions.
