Anger can be directed inward (depression) or outward towards others. We will uncover where in your body you feel the anger, how it affects your actions and feelings that it can generate. Will help you to label and express your angry feelings in a healthy and safer way eg. journaling, sports and being heard and feeling seen in therapy. Anger can be useful in some situations and can be a protection to some people. We will uncover together what your anger is like and what purpose it serves.

Anger can be a powerful force for change in our lives - it can give us the energy to move from situations that might be unhealthy or unsafe. However, when anger becomes difficult to control, or when t begins to hurt the people we love, it is no longer helpful. I provide a safe place to explore what anger is, how it affects us, how it can be helpful, and when it has become detrimental to either yourself or those you loves, and to work with you to find ways to manage that anger in healthy ways.

My approach to anger is that it is an emotional response based on thoughts that are often irrational and habitual. The thoughts can be so fleeting and difficult to detect that they become automatic and feel as though the anger springs fully formed out of nowhere. But anger can be controlled if its origins are understood. Often, it is a learned response based on watching our parents and other formative influences in our lives handle problems. We can be socialized to be angry. It can feel empowering at times if it is directed outward toward injustice and hurt, but it can also be directed inward or misplaced because we perceive injustice and hurt where it does not exist.

Perceptions of anger vary based on personal experiences; some of us have experienced it as a destructive force presented through aggression or violence. Whether anger is getting in the way of authentic connection, resolving differences with others, or impacting your overall mental health, understanding it can be a helpful first step in anger therapy, also known as anger management therapy. In working with clients with anger-management problems, my approach often involves helping them feel understood and heard. Then, to increase their awareness of the different contributors to their issue, be it from unresolved feelings about past events, difficult recent events or worrying about the future. Using a structured cognitive-behavioral approach, such as found in CBT based workbooks such as the Cognitive Behavioral Workbook for Anger (William J Knaus) is often part of my strategy to increase insight and healthier coping skills.

Grey Matters International and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D approaches issues of anger management in a very humane yet fresh perspective. You see, anger is a normal emotion but it is the valence (intensity) as well as the coupling choice of what one does with this that is the problem. Telling someone to "not" do it or modifying behavior with a trite psychological plan that only breeds a compliant response is not the way to change anger. Brainwave optimization is a new cutting edge technology that allows one to rewire circuitry responsible for reactivity driving the anger. When we experience recurrent anger that feels overwhelming and overpowering, we can find ourselves feeling out of control and ashamed. Through self-exploration, we can start to uncover the underlying emotions that are fueling the anger as anger tends to show up when something deeper within us needs attention and processing, often emotions that stem from past experiences, unmet needs, or ignored boundaries. By working to identify the root causes of our anger, we can begin to understand them in a more meaningful and productive way, since processing buried emotions, or unexpressed needs can be incredibly healing. Over time, this awareness can also help to transform how we relate or react to ang
