Anger can be upsetting not only for the one receiving it but also for the one expressing it. Although we can believe that someone "makes" us angry it is usually our own trigger that fires off. We express anger not just because we feel we have a right to be angry but because we use anger as a way of self protection. It says "back off and leave me alone." Understanding your angry pain can free you from it's grip. I have helped many clients with this difficulty through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and inner child approaches that have proven to be successful in the treatment of anger.

A response to life's events falls upon a continuum from neutral to highly-reactive. At times anger, Gandhi called it "Righteous Indignation," is necessary to respond to injustices or inappropriate behaviours. However, uncontrolled, inappropriate anger is destructive to one's self and others. Mindfulness and Metta (Loving Kindness) meditations are excellent tools to deal with anger. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) also called Tapping, along with skillful use of affirmations can help to cool the fires of anger. The benefits of anger management lead to a regulating of emotions and thus a gaining of peace of mind, positive relationships, career and family security.

Anger is a powerful emotion that can cause disruption to relationships when it is not understand and managed appropriately. Often times when individuals are struggling with anger management, there is an underlying root cause that needs to be uncovered. Therapy can be a great tool to step into connection with your anger and understand why it is arising so that the root cause can be attended to and you can find empowerment in not letting your anger control your life and relationships.

Anger is just one of the many emotions we all experience. If anger is a problem for you, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) can help manage this difficult emotion and the physiological arousal that accompanies it. Anger management can help you recognize and manage triggers and learn to cope more effectively.

The therapy and counselling for Anger Management depends on whether you produce, receive, or exchange anger. If you are subjected to someone else's anger, there is a significant risk that you are being abused in one of its many forms. Your self-esteem may have been crushed over time and it isn't easy to recognize what's happened to you. When you find yourself producing anger, it's important to reflect on your actions. You may be repeating a learned habit. Reexamining your past can be a powerful motivator for change. If you both express anger, your abilities to cope have probably diminished, and an entirely new approach is required. A neutral, fair therapist who listens equally can help.

Perceptions of anger vary based on personal experiences; some of us have experienced it as a destructive force presented through aggression or violence. Whether anger is getting in the way of authentic connection, resolving differences with others, or impacting your overall mental health, understanding it can be a helpful first step in anger therapy, also known as anger management therapy. Anger is a completely normal, often healthy human emotion. But if it gets beyond your control, it can be very destructive in your work and interpersonal relationships and can drastically devastate the quality of your life. Fortunately, anger can be 'managed' which is very different than 'suppressing' it. Unexpressed anger leads to a host of other problems including high blood pressure. However, when we learn how to 'manage' our anger, we can learn to diminish both the emotional feelings and the physiological arousal that anger causes. We can learn to avoid triggers and develop strategies. We can learn how to problem solve, change our thinking and relax our bodies.
