Grief and loss are experienced in so many individual ways; there is no one way to grieve. Grief can also be complicated by the quality and status of the relationship, as well as unresolved issues, which can be so difficult to process once a loved one is gone. Grief and loss are also experienced by individuals who have lost something intangible, such as the loss of a dream or the loss of a significant relationship. Because the feelings can often be so difficult, repressing feelings may seem like a good option. Unfortunately, feelings don't go away just because we want them too. They will likely resurface at inopportune times. They don't go away till they are processed and worked through.

Grief and loss is a very personal issue and therapy can help express feelings, memorialize the loved one, integrate other losses, and more. I have helped individuals move through grief and loss of family members, pets, loss of buddies in military service, loss of a colleague or peer in the workforce. Sometimes, other factors make it difficult to take the time to grieve, and therapy can help.

Grief is a common human experience, but many underestimate the impact that loss will have on them. They are not often prepared for the long-term impact of key losses such as death, job loss, divorce, or other life transitions. Some can get stuck in the process, developing symptoms of depression, anxiety, or other issues. Counseling allows individuals to finish letting that process and to incorporate their loss into their life stories, redeeming the loss and finding life again in spite of the changes brought into their worlds.

Grief and loss is a part of so much more than many recognize in every day life. Most folks are familiar with the Kubler-Ross stages, but processing grief is much more than those five stages. There are tasks of mourning that can be explored and expanded with support in therapy. There are secondary losses as a result of an initial loss. Grief impacts how open we feel to new relationships in our lives.
