I have been able to improve relationship for couples by treating each member separately with the belief that an individual who experiences less distress will be better adjusted for themselves and also be able to interact more effectively with others including a mate. Much traditional couples therapy is based on a communication model, perhaps starting with trying to be back in touch with experiencing and communicating the positive feelings present in the early stages of the couple's relationship. Then focusing communicating better in the present, which can work for awhile, but may be hard to sustain. How much do you want to change? Relationships don't have to be 50-50, but 95-5 doesn't work.
