We have several approaches to psychotherapy here at the center. We are humanistic in that there is not a cookie cutter approach in working with people. What works for some may not work for others. We tailor your work to your personality and your history. People often say they don't want to focus on the past because it is over and there is nothing that can be done about it. However, if you are recycling your past in the present and doing what we call, "returning to scene of the original crime" in the present, then you are already stuck in the past. Our work with you is to understand what you are recycling so that you can leave the past behind and stop it from interfering with your life.

Many forms of therapy exist, some easily understood, for example, physical therapy, and some, more complex and misunderstood, such as psychotherapy. Physical therapy is understood as a therapist introducing bodily knowledge and new ways of positioning and strengthening the body through exercises and stretches, in order to ameliorate physical pain and distress. In truth, psychotherapy is not different, though instead of the material world of body, psychotherapy works with the abstract world of mind. I practice psychotherapy by introducing psychological knowledge and new ways of positioning and strengthening one's thoughts and feelings in order to ameliorate emotional pain and distress.

Psychotherapy is just a fancy word for the process of healing that goes on in a Counseling office. When clients come to my office, I show hospitality and offer something to drink. We have soft music playing and just begin to talk about the areas of interest that have brought them in. From that first session, I determine what is wrong and what needs to happen in order to facilitate the change my clients are hoping for. As a matter of fact, I write out two goals for each client from what they've talked about, each with 3 or 4 objectives to reach those goals! My approach is eclectic, taking what is effective from various approaches of psychology to help the client to heal. My approah is candid and direct which often helps cutting through dysfunction. Dysfunction stops the flow of love between individuals; to be functional again means restoring a relationship back to what it's main purpose was in the first place - to love, support and to to embrace so growth can occur. Therapy doesn't begin until an individual takes responsibility for what they may be doing that is unhealthy without blaming shifting. Discovering what is co-dependency may also be an excellent tool. I also help client to learn about Old Brain/ New Brain concepts.

I believe that psychotherapy should really be called "mental health education" and I consider myself a mental health educator. I assist my clients to understand how the human psychological system works and, like any system (e.g., electrical, computer), the better people understand it the more often they can use it in there best interest. Most people don't understand how their own psychological system works and that's why the research shows that by midlife (age 46) only 14% of adults experience good mental health. This would not be the case if people understood the way we all work psychologically and this is what I teach my clients.
