Indeed in my 20 year experience, eating problems are not usually related to food, but are related to unresolved or suppressed emotions. Although different eating disorders spring from different issues, food is a basic emotional as well as physical need from the day you were born. We can use it to satisfy, temporarily many other needs. Or we can pridefully deny ourselves. In addition, we live in a culture that can have very harsh, judgmental attitudes about bodies, attitudes that we internalize without noticing. You may have been told that your body image is distorted, that other people do not see you the way you do. Self-acceptance is the beginning. I have several years of clinical experience working in an eating disorder treatment center at a partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) level of care. I have continued to work with clients around body image issues, disordered eating, and eating disorders as a outpatient therapist. While the work is difficult, I believe there is hope for recovery!
