Since I have a Masters, Doctorate, and A Doctor of Divinity in the Theology field and then a Ph.D I use these insights to your advantage. Also I rely heavily on prayer and praying with you at each session. I have developed these fields so I can understand what and how you believe and how it is effecting you and others. A very large part of one's life is spiritual. We may choose to hide from this fact, but the truth is the truth. I do not see my role as changing your values, but may suggest in an area of some other ways to consider. After all, how and what we think is the way we act out our lives. I have worked with most all different religions and understand theire process.

In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus states “If your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light.” This simple statement guides my approach to counseling. The light exists, and we sometimes need help to improve the soundness of our mental and emotional “eyes” to let more light into our personal awareness and influence our feelings, thoughts and behavior. I respect the sacred and unique way that each person experiences a relationship with God, especially during periods of mental, emotional, or relational distress. From my own study of the Bible, I am continually impressed by the applicability of Christian values and truth to issues of mental, emotional, and relational health.

For many people, faith is an important part of their lives and their decisions are often informed by their understanding of Scripture. Unless we're willing to discuss religious beliefs, we may remain stuck. I'm comfortable having conversations about religious beliefs. I have a BA in Theology and serve as a lay pastor on the side where I preach sermons. With that being said, be wary of anyone who claims to speak *for* God or knows the "Biblical" thing to do. I consider myself a "Christian counselor" rather than a "Biblical counselor" because I usually do not quote the Bible in counseling unless you ask for something specific because I think it's too often abused. I do not replace the Spirit.

Change is hard. Our brokenness runs deeper in us than we wish, but so does our capacity for growth and change. My Christian perspective gives me a helpful frame for grappling with and understanding this tension: It gives me great compassion for how challenging it can be (due to our brokenness) to grow and change, and it also gives me great hope for each person's innate ability to change (because of God's protecting within us the capacity for healing).
