Clients benefit from counseling for depression by acknowledging the function of depression which is to "slow things down" enough to pay attention to what is going on in the person's life that is contributing to their depression, i.e., buried emotions, misplaced dependencies, unresolved losses, and false beliefs, with symptoms such as irritability, change in appetite and sleep, feeling of hopelessness and worthlessness, loss of enjoyment in previously enjoyed activities.
