Underlying issues and ways of responding to unmet needs often fuel destructive conflict and/or distance, so couples are helped to understand what underlying needs they can each touch in the other so as to enhance the level of intimacy. Unrealistic expectations and demands must be given up to as to create space for freedom of choice and safety within the relationship. Couples must learn to extend grace and forgiveness and a desire to grow in personal maturity through their unique relationship.
