We look at anger as a secondary emotion. It is very easy to characterize a person as "angry" and not explore where the reaction or response truly stems from. Our approach is to provide healing at the root. We explore what other emotions may be operating, so that we can address what has really provoked a negative response. We also try to find ways to replace the thoughts that evoke an angered response with something that helps our clients feel more in control.

Anger provides information about what we think/feel is being threatened, and it provides the energy to act on that information. Since we are wired to become angry WHEN appropriate, only the misuse of anger is a problem. However, anger often hijacks our thinking which then compounds the original problem. When helping clients develop improved anger management skills, I help them understand the elements of our emotional-physical anger response and learn to diffuse them and effectively use the information and energy that anger provides.

Anger management is an important skill to master in our ever changing world, which brings increasing amounts of stress into our lives. I would utilize two tools: discussing an individual's background to discover possible causes for the behavior, and teaching positive approaches toward stressors.
