Maintaining "sobriety" is tougher. Most people can't keep away from their addition because they benefit from it in some very deep and beneficial way. We need to find a way to fulfill that deep need/benefit, even better than the habit behavior allows. Usually, that requires involvement in a 12-step program and therapy is supportive and psycho-educational. Once sobriety and recovery have been established, then therapy can begin to look at deeper issues, causes, and past wounds, thus allowing for true healing to take place.
