In Tallahassee, there are a number of services that offer care to adults, children and families suffering from mental illness and are in need of support and care. The National Alliance on Mental Illness, a national non-profit advocacy organization, holds regular events in Tallahassee, from support groups to educational classes. Their Family-to-Family program is a free, 12-week class that seeks to improve coping and problem-solving abilities for families and friends of individuals experiencing mental health hardships. Tallahassee's Alzheimer's Project offers several support groups where caregivers can speak to one another in order to educate themselves and help one another.3
Local Initiatives
The STOP Organization is a youth-empowerment non-profit in the Big Bend area. Standing for Striving to Obtain Principles, STOP provides participants with personal growth, leadership skills, and teaches them community ethics. Children in the program also develop what STOP calls “positive personal principles.”4
The Florida Youth Leadership Forum provides leadership training for students with disabilities. Sponsored by the non-profit The Able Trust, the forum takes Florida high school juniors and seniors with disabilities and provides them with helpful workshops and classes over a long weekend in Tallahassee. Programs focus on self-esteem, leadership skills, and preparing students with disabilities for life after high school, including workforce training.
