Simply stated, the goal I pursue in family therapy is to help family members improve communications, to gain understanding, solve family problems, and handle special family situations. This will ultimately result in a better functioning home environment. The psychotherapy should reduce stress and conflict by improving the interactions between family members. As a family therapist, I seek to have all family members affected by the problem in the room; use different techniques to accomplish the goals.

Most family therapists inadvertently create more chaos through their well-intentioned efforts to assist a family move through a change process. Why? Brains are inherently deregulated (all of us, may I add) and most talking and dialoguing misses brain-centric problems that need more intensive help. Family therapy involves two or more members in the family unit. Everyone will get a chance to get their needs heard in session while learning ways to effectively interact with the other members. There are many reasons for families to come to family counseling: enhancing communication, parent / child conflict, divorce, new baby, blended families, problems in school, bullying, etc.
