We write about it, sing and dream about it: relationships. However, with a 60% divorce rate and an even higher emotional divorce statistic tells us the real story: marriages are in trouble. Many couples live in a dungeon of isolation and hurt that can be incredibly painful yet so often the advice given is: "stick it out". While we strongly affirm the importance of the marriage commitment, we also affirm that there can be more, much more. I very much enjoy working with couples, and see couples counseling as a very active, dynamic process. After quickly helping a couple to identify their particular problem areas, we begin to work together toward finding solutions, improving communication patterns, building intimacy, and learning what our partner needs to feel loved, I often encourage couples with "homework assignments", in order to reinforce new information learned within the session.

Couples work is unique and interesting. What a lot of people don't understand it that of course you have different viewpoints - you are in different bodies, have different life experiences and are actually looking at different views! Many times the problem is simply communication: no matter how many times you tell your partner what you need, they just don't hear it. That is where I come in- helping people to get heard and also to hear clearly! In this way there can be a softening and a coming together, with both partners feeling loved and understood. In my work with couples, I view the relationship through the lens of attachment theory. The person we chose to be our partner, may become our "secure home base" as your relationship grows to be a healthy partnership to celebrate, depend on and lean on through the ups and downs of life. I view couples counseling as working with three entities: both partners and the relationship.
