I work with children ages 5 and above. I work with understanding the parents' concern about the presenting issue/s. I get the child's voice into the therapy session to explore understanding for therapy and develop goals. After therapeutic needs assessments, and establishing goals. I utilize either CBT or Solution Focused Brief Therapy along with art or play therapy. I will include family sessions, as I belief that changes are not only needed in the individual client, but in the family system.

Children need to be heard and understood. If not given a voice they will hold their thoughts and feelings in and then burst in temper tantrums and or act out. Young children often can get a bad rap when it comes to counseling. Often times people fail to realize how smart and observant children are as well as underestimate a child's ability to discover their worth and potential. My approach in children's counseling revolves primarily around working with the child and learning about who they are and what they want from life. However since children do not exist in a vacuum, caregiver sessions are also an important part of my therapeutic approach so care givers can discover new strategies to better support their child.

Small children aged 3 to 8 typically do not participate in family therapy because the vast majority of therapists consider such children too young to articulate their feelings or understand complex patterns of behavior.
