I have worked with young children for 27 years as a special education teacher. I learned ways of helping them be successful. My internship was counseling young children at a private school that was created to help children with learning problems. Many children I counseled had more than one disability. I realize that it is not easy to raise a child who has the extra burden of coping with a disability or an emotional disorder, but there are many things a parent can do to help their child. Although it’s a hard pill to swallow, I’ve found that young children often display anxiety, disobedience, and other problem-behaviors because they are absorbing chaos within the home... often because the parents haven’t dealt with their own issues. So many child behavior and parenting problems simply vanish, once we understand a few basics. Children are not small adults, and should not be expected to respond the way adults do. Children, like everyone else, respond beautifully to praise, love and reward. By contrast, punishment creates only resentment and the motivation to not get caught.
