I utilize cognitive behavioral and mindfulness strategies in addressing difficulties with anger. The feeling of anger is neither good nor bad. It's healthy to react with anger when you perceive you have been mistreated. The emotion is not the problem—it is your perception of the problem and what behavior follows the anger. Anger becomes a problem when it harms you or others in your life. I guide clients to healthy perceptions and reactions in managing their anger.

Anger is one of the emotions that is often so misunderstood and seen as scary. Sometimes it can lead to people who experience anger being afraid to let others know because they fear judgement or being misunderstood. Often is is just as treatable as anxiety or depression. Understanding our emotions and how to regulate them is key and when we can lean in without judgment to observe the emotions as a curious scientist than solutions become possible. At KML, we focus on DBT heavily when it comes to understanding anxiety and learning new ways to manage it. We also first always ensure yours and others safety and develop a plan if needed. We will not judge you and are here to help you change!

Anger gets a bad rap. Others focus so much on the anger that they don’t understand the pain, triggers, and trauma that often exists just under the surface. If given the honor of working with you, I’ll not only give you tools to manage the anger, but help you get to the root cause of where it’s coming from in the first place and help it to heal.

In my experience as an EMDR therapist, I pay close attention to the links between past and present. I’ve seen time and time again how unhealed emotional wounds resurface and come out sideways. While anger management can provide helpful strategies, they don’t get to the heart of the issue. Often, anger is what we see on the surface, but the real problem is what’s underneath the anger. Negative beliefs like “I’m helpless,” “I’m out of control,” and “I’m a failure,” start to bubble up, and anger comes to the rescue. It can get us in trouble, but at least it gets the blood pumping. With research-proven EMDR therapy, I help men heal anger at its source so it doesn’t have to be managed.

Grey Matters International and the work of Kevin J. Fleming, Ph.D approaches issues of anger management in a very humane yet fresh perspective. You see, anger is a normal emotion but it is the valence (intensity) as well as the coupling choice of what one does with this that is the problem. Telling someone to "not" do it or modifying behavior with a trite psychological plan that only breeds a compliant response is not the way to change anger. Brainwaive optimization is a new cutting edge technology that allows one to rewire circuitry responsible for reactivity driving the anger. Anger is such a common emotional response, and is so prevalent in this hurried, frustrating World in which we live. I often tell my clients "anger is not a stand-alone emotion, but is rather a secondary response to a deeper underlying frustration, or perceived lack of control." Our job then, is to get to the underlying emotion that is driving the anger, and deal with that. Recognizing your unique anger triggers is certainly a very important part of this process.
