I believe that the notion of "addictive personalities" is nonsense. There are important differences between drug addiction and so-called internet addiction, for example. I know that addictions arise for many reasons, and that we may never understand most of those reasons. Happily, people can and do overcome addictions without having to understand all of its mysterious causes. 12-step programs are popular, but I reject the idea that we must surrender control of our behavior to a higher power in order to solve these problems. Building solutions for addictions is not very different from building solutions to other problems. We need only use our existing strengths in ways that make sense.

Addictions can be so difficult to manage and come out of nowhere. When we work together, we will gently learn the core of the addictive distress that you are experiencing. As I get to know you, we may find that some of the distress is rooted in early childhood trauma and attachment wounding. We will embrace all parts of yourself and learn about the challenging experiences you may have grown up with that manifested into the distress you feel today. Addictions can be a messenger, an alarm telling you that it is time to heal experiences from earlier in life.
