If you’re struggling with addiction or unwanted habits, you might feel like you’ve tried everything. Then men I work with are often successful in other areas of their life, and so they're frustrated that their discipline and will power isn’t enough to change their behaviors. As an experienced addiction therapist and coach, I understand the neuroscience of addiction and the strategies necessary for you to find freedom from unwanted behaviors. In our sessions, we will create a personalized plan to help you form new patterns, heal from your shame, and experience the breakthroughs you were destined for.

Addiction Counseling is examined by evaluating consequences of use, patterns of use, triggers, relapses, and developing a relapse prevention plan. I adapt a philosophy that clients are unique, experts on their lives, have strengths, and resources to contribute to their treatment process. I evaluate the level of motivation for change and the clients cognitive ability, which would determine my approach to therapy. I may use CBT, Solution Focused, Narrative, or Family Systems therapy. The processing of therapy is systematic in exploring clients' support network, such as employment, AA/NA community, Church, family involvement, and/or other community group.

I believe that the notion of "addictive personalities" is nonsense. There are important differences between drug addiction and so-called internet addiction, for example. I know that addictions arise for many reasons, and that we may never understand most of those reasons. Happily, people can and do overcome addictions without having to understand all of its mysterious causes. 12-step programs are popular, but I reject the idea that we must surrender control of our behavior to a higher power in order to solve these problems. Building solutions for addictions is not very different from building solutions to other problems. We need only use our existing strengths in ways that make sense.

I have over 10 years experience working with addictions including time as a clinical director for treatment programs. In my current practice, I work with those exploring if they may have a substance abuse problem or those who consider themselves to be high-functioning but abusing substances. I will do an assessment with you to determine the extent of the problem, and make appropriate recommendations. I also work with those in early recovery who want to understand how to cope with life sober and resolve long standing issues that contributed to the addiction.

For them, I create individualized programs based on the principles of SMART Recovery and Life Ring Recovery, which address underlying problems, such as anger. I have seen addiction in many different forms throughout my career and understand the common threads that cause addiction to manifest. I usually find that a person who struggles with addiction is highly sensitive to the world around them, and was never taught adequate coping skills to effectively cope with difficulties. As a result, they use their addiction to "numb out" and avoid thinking about the pain they are feeling. My approach to this type of issue is to truly understand my clients and the factors that shaped who they are today. Then we work together to identify unhealthy patterns and empower them to use more healthy and effective coping skills to manage their lives.
