When working with couples, I focus both on specific issues you come to therapy to address as well as the root cause of those issues. Issues contributing to distress among couples can include their family of origin, outside stressors, or past relationships. These issues (among others) can often cause marital distress, causing people to feel like their partner is living in a different reality than them. I find value in their philosophies and methods and weave them into my work with couples when appropriate. At a very basic level, I think couples frequently suffer from a perception problem. They think they know how their partner is thinking and feeling but in reality that is just a projection of their own imagination. Helping couples recognize this is an important aspect of our early work together. A deeper level of work includes helping couples identify and work through the unconscious motivations that drive their behavior.

Instead of using a one size fits all approach to working with couples I partner with them to develop their own unique therapy plan that usually involves combining several approaches such as helping them to use facilitative communication focused on clarifying and understanding each other's needs, as well as finding ways to respond to those needs in ways that are experienced as caring. Sex therapy is also another specialization of mine which can be included in couples therapy. Most of the couples with whom I word decide to stay together but this isn't always the goal or outcome. If they do decide to separate or divorce I work with them to do so in ways that are least harmful to all.
