Young children don't necessary have the skill or developmental capability to share their feelings verbally, instead they might act out more or show difficulties sleeping or engaging with other children. Since at a young age the child is not able to articulate and understand their feelings and experiences cognitively, I utilize play therapy and EMDR to provide a safe way for children to overcome painful experiences and to find better ways of dealing with difficult situations in their lives.

Having worked in the elementary schools as well as raising six young children myself, I have extensive experience in working with this group. I use a family systems approach to therapy and prefer to partner with parents in the treatment of their children. If family therapy is not a possibility, I will see children on their own, also creating a strong collaborative alliance with their parents.

If young children are traumatized, I offer EMDR therapy with their mothers or fathers present, to help these little ones process disturbing events, nightmares and fears, so that these things aren't stuck in their minds their whole lives - which is what frequently happens. I only counsel young children with parents involved. It is such a blessing to work with these sweet babes to help them be carefree, as children should be.

Many therapists share they use play therapy in their practice with children, but have not taken further training on its use in therapy. I am a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, which means I completed 3 years and 3000 additional hours of practice after licensure, clinical supervision, consistent continued education courses, and significant focus in at least two play therapy evidence based practices.
