Addictions can take many forms such as substance use (alcohol and drugs) or behavioural addictions like eating or gambling. The addictive behaviours can be seen on a spectrum that ranges in severity of the issues depending on the person and their unique situation. The client that seeks support for their addictive behaviours is taking a courageous step forward to be ready to learn about their addictive behaviours. The client always sets the pace as to what they would like to achieve in the sessions and what (if anything) they want to do anything to create change in their life.

Addiction treatment is a challenging and ongoing process that requires a lot of support. What is often helpful for clients is using a CBT approach or a DBT approach which has been shown with evidence-based research to help manage addiction. Some of the focusses in counselling with addiction is often to prevent relapse, have better communication, improve family relationships, discovering better and healthier ways to cope than using the addiction. We would also discuss other factors that can help manage the addiction, such as meditation, religious involvement, and others.

Olivia is a certified Sexual Recovery Therapist (SRT), Partner Recovery Therapist (PRT) and Partner Betrayal Trauma Therapist (PBTT) with the American Association of Sex Addiction Therapy. She specializes in helping individuals struggling with sexual and/or love addiction overcome their addiction and experience freedom and life transformation. Additionally, Olivia offers individual and marriage counselling to the spouse who has experienced betrayal trauma.

Addiction is now seen as being a chronic disease. Its been found that brain circuitry is affected by the disease whereby the drive for reward and gratification leads to a clouding of judgement. Previous memory as to costs of the problem behaviour is overlooked and poor choices are made. Good intervention practice includes addressing the behaviour "cycle" and identifying points of intervention within the cycle. This is commonly known as relapse prevention. With an extensive background and training in relapse prevention and working in private practice for 17 years, I can help develop a workable relapse plan irregardless of the addiction (substance use, gaming, gambling, internet porn etc.)
